New Orleans Travel Guide: Jazz, Gumbo & the Most Spirited City in America

"New Orleans is a city that vibrates. I landed, dropped my bags in a beautiful French Quarter guesthouse that Rovago found, and headed straight to Jackson Square. The sound of a brass band was already bouncing off the buildings. I grabbed a 'Muffuletta' sandwich from Central Grocery and ate it on a bench. The humidity hit me like a wet blanket, but the energy of the street made me forget it immediately. This city is alive in a way no other American city is."

"Frenchmen Street is where the real music is. I skipped the tourist trap of Bourbon Street and followed the Klook jazz crawl recommendation. I spent four hours moving between clubs like Snug Harbor and The Spotted Cat. The music was so good it felt physical. I met a local named Otis who told me I had to try the chargrilled oysters at Acme — he wasn't wrong. NOLA is about following the music and the locals."

"Beignets at Café Du Monde at 2am is a requirement. I used Expedia to find a hotel in the Garden District — those massive oak trees and Victorian mansions are a beautiful contrast to the chaos of the Quarter. Riding the St. Charles streetcar (the oldest continuously operating streetcar in the world) for $1.25 is the best tour you can buy. The architecture here is so layered; it feels like Europe, the Caribbean, and America all at once."

"I did a swamp tour and a cemetery tour on my third day. Both were spooky and fascinating. I booked through Viator and we saw alligators, Spanish moss, and the elaborate above-ground tombs that make NOLA famous. Our guide explained the Voodoo history of the city, which is much more integrated into local life than most people think. Rovago made sure I had these booked early because they fill up fast."

"The food here is worth the trip alone. Gumbo, jambalaya, po'boys, crawfish etouffee. I used my Airalo eSIM to find a hidden po'boy shop in the Ninth Ward that only locals go to. Fried shrimp on fresh French bread with plenty of hot sauce. I also made sure my SafetyWing insurance was active — New Orleans is a city of excess, and it's good to know you're covered if that Mardi Gras spirit leads to a late-night mishap."

"My final evening was on a steamboat on the Mississippi. The city skyline was glowing, and a jazz band was playing 'Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans'. I realized I already did. NOLA is a city that gets under your skin. It's gritty, it's beautiful, and it's unapologetic. I left with a box of pralines, a bunch of beads, and a promise to myself to be back for Jazz Fest. New Orleans doesn't just want you to visit; it wants you to participate. Life is too short for average trips. Let Rovago craft your perfect itinerary and go explore."
